Role of Public Speaking in a CEO's Career
March 12th 2008 09:14
A quote for CEO on speaking well says : "To speak, and to speak well, are two things. A fool may talk, but a wise man speaks."
This quote comes from British poet and dramatist Ben Johnston and it describes well a book about CEO's most important job: Speak before audiences. This book "Speak Like A CEO" by Suzanne Bates reveals a treasure trove of quotes and anecdotes about the importance of communication of a leader in a modern world ; the highest officer in day-to-day management of a corporation, one who has the ultimate executive power within a company.. and one who is responsible to every employee, every member of the board, and every customer or client, as well as the community and sometimes the industry."
Bates is referring to the CEO - the Chief Executive Officer. She discussed the underdeveloped public speaking skills of most CEO's. One chapter is devoted to the 8 eight secrets of successful CEO and leaders who speak well. Secret # 7 is "Be Real" and begins with a Shakespearean quote : "This above all : To thine own self be true." Another one in secret # 8 : "Stand for Something" ; Bates wants the CEO to inspire his people to move on to a higher purpose where they can make a difference in this world.
Bates draws on lessons from a great tradition of speakers and preachers and emphasized the value of telling stories in speeches. From # 8 secret , the author also reminds CEO's of mistakes. One is "winging " important speeches, meaning, not preparing at all, being over confident that glib talk can do the job. From such a mistake, Bates delivers a truism in public speaking "Clarity is king."
