Lessons From Chinese Entrepreneurship

April 30th 2007 06:14
I'm not of Chinese descent but I can't help but notice this sense of entrepreneurship from the Chinese culture, the successful Chinese immigrants who come to our country and are now counted among the rich families in our land today.

What's the basic formula of Chinese entrepreneurship? Most Chinese businessmen and business tycoons who prosper doing business in our country started with small capital or investments. It is common to see them as peddlers balancing two cans of soybeans custards from their shoulder poles or hiring young boys to cart empty bottles, cans and old newspapers. They are smart to create the business on the basic needs of people : food, clothing, and shelter. They created brisk business and were content to make small profit. As their savings grew, so their business expanded. Their small stores becomes a grocery, the hardware into a huge enterprise.

Chinese children are routinely exposed to the family business. Their skills in business are acquired from day to day exposures to family business enterprise whether a small store in the corner, a junkyard, or wholesale trading in rice or tobacco.

An inspiring example of a "rag to riches" story of a poor Chinese immigrant who struggled to survive and eventually became one of the wealthiest man of the planet is Mr. Henry Sy. Henry Sy was 12 years old and came to Manila from China before World War II with no money. He started a shoe-retailing store, saved enough money, joined the booming buy-and-sell business after the war and became the owner of SM (Shoe Mart) Group of Companies, the Philippines largest chain of department stores.
