Walt Disney's Theme Parks : From Risky Venture To Multiple Revenue Source
April 15th 2007 07:38
If there's one entrepreneural story worth retelling, it is the uplifting tale of Walt Disney and his Disneyland. It's a story beyond thrilling rides and magic castles. In 1952, Walt Disney had trouble convincing his brother and business partner Roy to back his obsession to build a family-oriented amusement park. So he formed his owned company, WED Enterprises, to finance Disneyland, which opened in 1955.
Before the Internet days, the theme parks served as the place where people could interact with Disney character and the company could cross-promote it's movies and consumer products. Today, Disney's theme park division has expanded far beyond the few hundred acres in Anaheim, California. It include five-star restaurants, convention complexes and technologically sophisticated attractions. Disney also owns a minority stake in EuroDisney near Paris and manage Tokyo Disneyland for a Japanese owner. Lately, it has also opened an additional theme park in Hong Kong.
The idea is to smooth up the bumps of the highly seasonal and fluctuating revenue of their theme park business especially during Winter season. Today, theme parks and resorts are generating more profit for the company than it's films, according to the company's annual report.
